Senior Session Style Guide | Cara Olson Photography

Updated: Feb 5

Hey there! Are you preparing for your high school senior session, or know someone who is? You'll want to read these 10 tips on how to make sure you have flawless senior photos!

Tip #1 | BE YOURSELF

You are unique! Wear comfortable clothing that matches your personality and your own personal style.

Tip #2 | WEAR SOLID COLORS (OR SUBTLE PRINTS)

Solid colors or subtle prints work best for senior photos. Busy patterns, or large logos seems to draw more attention to your attire and not to you. You are the star here! Wear clothes that make you shine.

-Be aware of small, repetitive lines {typically found in men's dress shirts}. These patterns can look " rippled " in photos.-

Tip #3 | BRING OPTIONS

Bring multiple outfits. I do NOT limit outfit changes as long as we can fit everything in our allotted session time. During the session, I can help you decide which outfits will work best with the location.

Tip #4 | PROPS

Bring along any props that help tell your story. Are you a musician, dancer, or athlete? Or maybe you are going to school to be a doctor or teacher? Bring items that tell the story of who you are or what you plan to be in the future!

Tip #5 | GLASSES

Glasses tend to leave a glare in photos. If you need glasses to see, maybe consider wearing contacts during the session. Another trick that works great is to bring along an old pair of frames with the lenses taken out! This will help you look true to who you are, but will get rid of that glare.

-Transition lenses do not work well with outdoor photography as there is no good way to keep them from tinting.-

Tip #6 | AVOID NEON COLORS

Neon and florescent clothing can cause a color cast to your skin making you look very pink, orange or green. Sticking with soft, neutral colors is your best option!

Tip #7 | DRESS FOR THE LOCATION

Whether we are out in the country, in a major city or in your backyard, make sure you dress for the occasion. This goes along with tip #3 on bringing options. I can help make sure your outfit goes well with the location if we have multiple choices to choose from.

Tip #8 | NEW OUTFIT

Get yourself a new outfit that makes you EXCITED about your senior photos. It doesn't need to be fancy. It can be as simple as a new t-shirt. Pick something out just for your senior photos!

Tip #9 | DRESS FOR THE SEASON / TEMPERATURE

Dress in weather appropriate clothes. Your photos will not turn out well if you are sweaty from overheating or if you are shivering from being too cold. Wear light, breathable fabrics in the summer and dress in layers in the winter.

Tip #10 | RELAX & HAVE FUN

Make sure to have fun! These photos are all about you and who you are in this time in life. I am here to help you in anyway I can.
